Raised toward our $20,000 Goal

According to a 2020 UNESCO report, 43% of Afghanistan’s population is aged 14 years and younger. The literacy rate among the population aged 15 years and older is also 43%. Our ultimate goal is to build a future where Afghanistan’s population aged 15 years and older is >90% literate.

We plan to do this by setting up a network of ‘micro-schools’ whereby women in the community invite neighboring children to their homes to teach them how to read and write. This provides several advantages:

  1. Safety. Parents are more comfortable sending their children, especially their daughters, to the house of a trusted neighbor than to a building away from the neighborhood.

  2. Opportunity. Women who are not allowed to work outside of the home are given a chance to earn an income and play a more prominent role in the community.

  3. Quality. Children are in classes with a 4:1 student to teacher ratio, and thus receive focused attention in a nurturing environment.

  4. Scale and Assess. Every child can reach their neighbor’s house. And a city full of neighborhoods can hold more teachers and students than a single school building ever could.
